Getting Legally Married
Doesn't Have to Be Complicated!
Planning your wedding is exciting! You've probably been looking at venues, thinking about music, imagining walking down the aisle and wondering how everything is going to come together.
And then someone mentions the legal paperwork!
Suddenly, you're wondering what a solemniser actually does, whether you need to visit the HSE, what forms you have to fill in and whether you can still have the kind of wedding ceremony you've been imagining.
Well, the good news is that you absolutely can!
You can have a ceremony that's relaxed, personal, full of lovely moments and completely reflects the two of you, while still taking care of the legal requirements.
I'm a registered solemniser in the Republic of Ireland, and I'm also authorised to conduct legally recognised wedding ceremonies in Northern Ireland.
So whether you're getting married north or south of the border, I can help you create a ceremony that feels like yours, rather than something you've simply picked from a standard script.
And yes, I conduct wedding ceremonies seven days a week!
So whether you're dreaming of a Saturday afternoon wedding, a Sunday celebration or an evening ceremony, you're not restricted to the usual Monday-to-Friday timetable.
As long as I'm available and the relevant legal requirements are met, we can plan your ceremony for a day and time that suits you both.
And yes, there are a few legal bits and pieces to organise beforehand. The requirements are different depending on where you're getting married, but don't let that put you off.
You don't need to become an expert in marriage legislation just because you're getting married!
I'll explain what happens during the ceremony, talk you through the legal declarations and wedding vows, and help you understand what you need to arrange with the relevant authorities.
Whether you're planning a big celebration in a beautiful country house, a hotel wedding surrounded by everyone you know or something smaller and more intimate, we'll work together to make sure your ceremony is exactly what you're hoping for.
Because getting legally married is important, but that doesn't mean your ceremony has to feel formal or complicated.

Here's How to Get Legally
Married in Ireland
First of all, congratulations on your engagement!
Now, before you get carried away with venues, dresses and all the lovely wedding plans, there's a little bit of legal paperwork to organise.
In this short video, I'll walk you through the steps involved in getting legally married in the Republic of Ireland, so you know where to start, what you need to arrange and what to expect along the way.
If you'd prefer to read rather than watch the video, just scroll down to the next section, where I've explained the legal process step by step.
You'll also find my free downloadable guide to getting legally married in Ireland, which you can save and refer back to whenever you need it.
Getting Legally Married in
the Republic of Ireland
One of the lovely things about planning your wedding is deciding what kind of ceremony you'd like.
Maybe you're picturing a beautiful country house surrounded by family and friends, an outdoor ceremony on a sunny afternoon (fingers crossed for the Irish weather! ), or something small and intimate with just your favourite people.
Whatever you're planning, you might be wondering whether you can have a ceremony that's personal, relaxed and full of those little touches that make it yours, while still being legally married.
Well, the good news is that you absolutely can!
As a registered solemniser with FuturFaith, I can legally marry you at a suitable venue in the Republic of Ireland.
And the lovely part? Your ceremony doesn't have to feel formal or follow a script that could belong to anyone.
We'll work together to create something that reflects your personalities, your relationship and the kind of wedding day you're looking forward to.
Of course, there are a few legal bits and pieces to organise beforehand, but they're nothing to be frightened of!
You'll need to give the HSE at least three months' notice of your intention to marry, attend your marriage notification appointment and obtain your Marriage Registration Form (MRF).
You'll also need two witnesses who are aged 18 or over.
One little piece of advice from me — book your HSE appointment as early as you can.
Appointments can fill up quickly, particularly during busy wedding periods, and it's one thing you'll be glad to have ticked off your list.
And please don't worry if all the legal paperwork sounds a little confusing.
You don't need to know everything before getting in touch.
I'll happily explain the ceremony side of things, talk you through the legal declarations and wedding vows, and help you understand what needs to be arranged before your wedding day.
After all, you've enough decisions to make between flowers, music, menus and everything else without having to become an expert in marriage legislation!
And if you'd like to get a head start, I've put together a detailed guide to getting legally married in Ireland. It covers the legal process, the paperwork you'll need and some of the common mistakes to avoid.
It's there to make things a little easier and help you feel confident about what needs to happen before the big day.
Getting Legally Married
in Northern Ireland
If you're planning your wedding in Northern Ireland, there's a little bit of paperwork to sort out before the big day, but don't worry, it's all very manageable!
I can conduct legally recognised wedding ceremonies in Northern Ireland, and just like my ceremonies in the Republic, we'll work together to create something that feels personal, relaxed and reflects the two of you.
The legal requirements are slightly different on either side of the border, particularly when it comes to giving notice of marriage and where your ceremony can take place.
In Northern Ireland, you'll normally need to give at least 28 days' notice of your intention to marry, although I'd always recommend getting the paperwork started well in advance. Nobody needs that last-minute panic when there's a wedding to organise!
You'll also need to deal with the registrar at the relevant local council, and we'll make sure your chosen ceremony location meets the legal requirements.
And please don't worry if you haven't a clue where to start with any of this.
You don't need to have all the answers before getting in touch. I'll happily talk you through the process, explain what's involved and point you in the right direction.
After all, you've enough to be organising without trying to figure out marriage legislation as well!
What's the Difference Between
a Celebrant and a Registered Solemniser?
If you've started looking into wedding ceremonies, you've probably come across the words celebrant and solemniser.
And you might be sitting there thinking, what on earth is the difference, and which one do we actually need?
Don't worry, you're not the first couple to ask me that question, and I'm fairly certain you won't be the last!
So, here's the simple version.
A celebrant creates and conducts wedding ceremonies, but not every celebrant can legally marry you.
A registered solemniser, on the other hand, is authorised to conduct legally recognised marriages, provided all the legal requirements have been met.
And the good news? I'm both!
I'm a wedding celebrant and a registered solemniser in the Republic of Ireland, so I can look after the legal side of your marriage while also creating a ceremony that's personal, relaxed and feels like the two of you.
But there's a lot more to what I do than turning up on your wedding day, standing at the top of the aisle and telling you when to say I do!
And believe me, I wouldn't want it any other way.
We'll have a proper chat about your plans, what you'd love your ceremony to be like and the people you'd like to involve.
Maybe you'd love to write your own vows but haven't the faintest idea where to start. Or perhaps the thought of saying something personal in front of 150 guests has you breaking out in a cold sweat!
That's absolutely fine. There are plenty of options, and we'll find something you're both comfortable with.
Maybe you're thinking about including a unity candle, handfasting or a reading, but you're not quite sure how any of them work.
I'll explain everything, give you a few ideas and help you decide what feels right for you.
And if your entire ceremony plan at the moment consists of "We just want something lovely, relaxed and not too long", well, that's a perfectly good place to start too!
You don't need to have everything figured out before we speak.
That's my job. To guide you through it, help you make those decisions and make sure you're both looking forward to your ceremony rather than worrying about it.
By the time your wedding day comes around, you'll know exactly what's happening, what you need to do and when.
And I'll be there to make sure everything runs smoothly, so you can concentrate on the important bit.
Getting married and enjoying every minute of it!
Not Sure Where to Start?
That's Absolutely Fine.
Planning a wedding is exciting, but my goodness, there's a lot to think about!
And unless you've done this before, how on earth are you supposed to know what questions to ask about your ceremony?
When should you book your solemniser? Do you have to write your own vows? How long should the ceremony last? Can you involve your parents, your children or even the family dog?
And then there's the question I hear quite often: “Karen, we haven't a clue what we're doing. Is that normal?”
Absolutely! Sure, why would you?
Most couples have never planned a wedding ceremony before, and there's no reason you should know all the ins and outs of it.
That's where I come in.
I've spent over 30 years working in hospitality and weddings, including more than 20 years looking after weddings at Ballymascanlon House Hotel.
So I've seen a fair few weddings in my time!
I know the little things that can get overlooked, the questions couples sometimes forget to ask and how much difference it makes when you've someone experienced looking after you.
And I also know that no two couples are the same.
Some arrive with spreadsheets, Pinterest boards and every little detail planned out. Others haven't got much further than booking the venue and deciding they want to get married!
Both are absolutely fine by me.
We'll have a proper chat, I'll explain your options and we'll work out what you'd like your ceremony to look and feel like.
I'll give you ideas, answer your questions and probably mention a few things you hadn't even thought about.
And if there's something you're not sure about, just ask. There's no such thing as a silly question when you're planning something you've never done before.
You bring yourselves, your ideas and whatever questions you've got. I'll bring the experience, a few suggestions and plenty of reassurance.
And between us, we'll get your ceremony exactly where it needs to be.
