Humanist Wedding
What Do Couples Mean by a Humanist Wedding?
Many couples contact me looking for what they describe as a "Humanist Wedding Ceremony". In many cases, they're simply looking for a warm, personalised, non-religious ceremony rather than one conducted by a Humanist Celebrant. Because terms such as Humanist, Celebrant, Registered Solemniser and Registrar are often used interchangeably, it's easy to become confused about the different options available. This guide explains the differences, helping you choose the ceremony that's right for you.
What Is a Humanist Wedding?
The term "Humanist wedding" is often used to describe a personalised wedding ceremony that focuses on the couple, their story and the promises they make to one another.
Humanist ceremonies are conducted by Humanist celebrants and are based on Humanist principles. Many couples choose this style of ceremony because they want something personal, meaningful and centred around their relationship.
Why the Confusion?
Over the years, the term "Humanist wedding" has become widely recognised. As a result, many venues, suppliers and couples use it as a general description for any personalised ceremony outside a traditional church setting.
In reality, there are several ways to have a personalised legal wedding ceremony in Ireland, depending on who conducts your ceremony.
A personalised ceremony isn't exclusive to one type of celebrant.
What Are Your Options?
If you're looking for a personalised wedding ceremony, you may wish to explore:
• A civil ceremony conducted by a HSE Registrar.
• A personalised legal ceremony conducted by a Celebrant who is also a Registered Solemniser.
• A personalised ceremony conducted by a Celebrant from an organisation whose approach reflects your beliefs, values and the type of ceremony you'd like to create.
• A Church wedding.
• A symbolic ceremony if you've already completed the legal paperwork separately.
Each option offers a different approach, and the right choice depends on your beliefs, your values and the type of ceremony you'd like to create.
A Personalised Ceremony Is About You
The most important thing isn't the title someone uses.
It's finding the person who understands your vision and can create a ceremony that feels authentic, meaningful and true to your relationship.
Many Registered Solemnisers, including myself, create highly personalised ceremonies that reflect each couple's personalities, values and wishes while also legally solemnising the marriage.
Looking for a Personalised Ceremony?
Many couples who begin their search looking for a Humanist wedding are simply hoping for a warm, meaningful and personalised ceremony.
As the Celebrant and Registered Solemniser behind Timeless Ceremonies, I can legally solemnise your marriage while creating a ceremony that's centred around your relationship, your values and the moments that matter most to you.
Whether your ceremony is spiritual, semi faith, mixed faith, no faith or just non religious in tone, it will always be written with you at its heart.
Still Unsure?
If you're unsure which ceremony option is right for you, I'd be delighted to help.
There's no pressure and no obligation, just an opportunity to talk through your options and answer any questions you may have.
